Home Decor and Giftware Compliance in the UK and EU
Published date: 24 June 2026
Product safety, clear labelling and responsible sourcing are becoming more important than ever for retailers. Here is how Something Different Wholesale is supporting customers with compliance information across the UK and EU.
Over the past 18 months, our compliance department has been working to prepare the business for regulatory updates across the UK and EU. With thousands of SKUs across a wide range of product categories and materials, this is a major ongoing project that includes tracking regulation changes, reviewing affected products and maintaining product-level documentation.
This work is designed to give our retail customers greater confidence when buying from Something Different Wholesale. From product technical files and testing documentation to multilingual safety information, recycling updates and future digital product passports, our goal is to make compliance information easier to access, easier to understand and easier to pass through the supply chain where required.
Why Compliance Matters for Retailers
Product compliance is not just about meeting legal requirements. It is also about protecting customers, giving retailers confidence in what they sell and ensuring that product information can be accessed quickly when needed.
As regulations continue to evolve, retailers need suppliers who can provide clear product details, documented testing where applicable and a transparent approach to materials, packaging, warnings and instructions for use.

Product Technical Files and UK Product Safety Requirements
Every SKU has its own product technical file available through our website. These files are designed to bring key product details together in one place, including product information, material content, ID numbers, country of origin and supporting compliance documents.
Where applicable, product technical files may also include declarations of conformity, testing certificates and other evidence-based documentation. This documentation supports our product safety approach and helps retailers access the information they need quickly.
In the UK, general product safety requirements are designed to help ensure that consumer products are safe when used normally or in reasonably foreseeable ways. Our technical file process supports this by creating a clear documentation trail for products and categories where specific product standards may not already exist.
Examples of Product Safety Documentation
- Food migration testing for relevant kitchen, tableware and food contact products.
- Jewellery testing in accordance with REACH Annex XVII to help ensure materials meet safety requirements around restricted substances such as cadmium, lead and nickel.
- Doorstop documentation, including requested flammability and asbestos certificates where applicable.
- Declarations and certificates held in product technical files where available.
- Product-level identification, including product codes, barcodes, materials and origin information.
EU GPSR: Risk Assessments, Testing and Product Information
Alongside UK product safety requirements, we are adapting our product technical file process for the EU General Product Safety Regulation. This includes adding pre-market risk assessments, in-house testing documentation and more detailed product safety records where required.
For home fragrance products that use tealight candles, our compliance department carries out in-house testing to help ensure safe and even heat distribution. This includes checking whether products are suitable for wax, oil or both, and monitoring that surface temperature does not exceed the recommended 66°C.
Important Home Fragrance Safety Note
Unless otherwise stated, all Something Different Wholesale home fragrance oil burners are suitable for use with a 4 hour unscented tealight. Retailers and end users should always follow the product-specific instructions and warning information provided.
Product-Level Information
New product ranges landing from 2026 onwards include updated product information, warnings and packaging details. Product-level documents and downloads are made available through product pages where applicable, helping customers find key details before they buy.
Existing products which are re-purchased are being updated, so as we move forward all products will have the updated warnings and information.
Example shown: LED House Ornament Packaging.
CLP: Updated Home Fragrance Packaging and Labelling
Our home fragrance products have received a packaging and labelling update in line with changes to the Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulation. This regulation covers how substances and mixtures are classified and how hazard information is communicated on packaging.
We have updated product artwork to include the necessary hazard and safety information for sale in multiple languages, including English, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Swedish, Finnish and Greek.
Where possible, we have included as many languages as packaging space allows. For products where space is limited, we have developed a QR code system so customers can access hazard and safety information in all 22 EU languages. Coming into 2027, this information will also be available on our website prior to purchase.

EUDR: Preparing for Responsible Material Sourcing Requirements
The EU Deforestation Regulation is designed to help ensure that relevant products placed on the EU market are not linked to deforestation or forest degradation. As this regulation comes into force, we are working closely with our supply chain to ensure qualifying product categories have the correct paperwork in place for customs and warehouse release.
This includes developing stronger supply chain communication around raw materials, product categories and the information needed to evidence responsible sourcing where required.
What This Means for Customers
- We are reviewing affected product categories and materials.
- We are working with suppliers to obtain documentation for qualifying products.
- We are preparing for future customs and warehouse release requirements.
- We are strengthening visibility of raw materials and finished goods across the supply chain.
Digital Product Passports: Building More Transparent Product Information
Digital Product Passports are expected to become an important part of product compliance and sustainability information across relevant product categories. For textiles and products containing batteries, we are preparing product passports that will be accessible via QR code and designed to give customers clear product-level information.
Our product passports will be developed to include material content, manufacturing information, testing certificates in English and additional product information in EU Member State languages where required. We are also preparing to include circularity information, such as how to repair, reuse or recycle a product and its expected lifetime.
Reuse Inspiration
We would love to see creative ways customers reuse our products, especially textile items such as tote bags. Have you ever turned one into a cushion, wall hanging or storage piece? Share your ideas with us and help inspire more circular product stories.
EPR and PPWR: Reviewing Packaging for a More Responsible Future
Extended Producer Responsibility and Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation updates are changing the way businesses think about packaging. We are tracking, amending and revising our product packaging, favouring recyclable cardboard alternatives where possible and reducing empty space in our boxes to help cut packaging waste.
In conjunction with EPR, we are also working on PPWR readiness by reviewing packaging products and working with our supply chain to develop deeper communication around raw materials, finished packaging and product-level packaging decisions.
Packaging Improvements We Are Working On
- More recyclable options, with cardboard alternatives prioritised where possible.
- Reduced packaging waste by reviewing box sizes and reducing unnecessary empty space.
- Clearer recycling information across new designs from January 2026.
- Country-specific recycling data for the UK and Europe, including Italy, France and Spain.
- Closer supplier communication from raw materials through to finished product and packaging.
Compliance Is an Ongoing Commitment
Compliance is not a one-off task. Regulations, product ranges and material requirements continue to evolve, which is why our compliance department works closely with our product, design, buying and supply chain teams to keep documentation moving with the business.
For retailers, this means better access to the information behind the products you buy, from material details and testing records to warning labels, instructions, recycling information and future digital product passports.
