Full Container Load Ordering for Retail

    Published date: 11 August 2026

What Is Full Container Load Ordering and What Do Retail Buyers Need to Know?

Full Container Load ordering can be an efficient option for large and multi-location retailers buying stock at scale. Here is what the process involves, how long it can take and what you need to consider.

At Something Different Wholesale, we offer flexibility across a wide range of order volumes. Most products are available to purchase in singles, while our volume-ordering service supports retailers purchasing significant quantities for multiple stores, distribution centres or planned campaigns.

What is a Full Container Load?

A Full Container Load (FCL) is a shipment in which one customer’s order fills a complete shipping container. Depending on the order and stock requirements, goods may be supplied directly from our factories or arranged from our warehouse.

This type of ordering is most suitable for retailers with predictable high-volume demand and the storage or distribution capacity to receive substantial quantities of stock.

How Long Does an FCL Order Take?

For a new product development order, the journey from initial design to shipping usually takes approximately five to six months. Once a container is on the water from China, sea transit to the UK averages around eight weeks, which is the longest shipping route from our overseas factories.

These timings are estimates. Sampling, production capacity, sailing schedules, port conditions and customs processes can all affect the final delivery date, so it is important to discuss fixed launch dates as early as possible.

    Typical Process

Design → Initial sample → Sign-off → Purchase orders → Production sample approval → Gold seal sample approval → Shipping

    What Documentation Is Needed?

The documentation prepared or retained for an FCL shipment may include a Commercial Invoice, Packing List, HS Commodity Codes, Bill of Lading/Telex, Certificate of Origin, Declarations of Conformity and, when required, a fumigation certificate.

Exact requirements depend on the products and destination. Our team retains the relevant product declarations and works with our freight forwarders, to coordinate the shipping process.

Is FCL Ordering Right for Your Business?

It may be worth considering if you:

    • Need large quantities for multiple stores or a central distribution network
    • Have sufficient storage and handling capacity
    • Can plan stock requirements several months in advance
    • Have a clear launch date, campaign or period of forecast demand
    • Are looking for a maximum margin on products from volume discounts

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does an FCL order always come directly from a factory?

Not necessarily. Depending on the order and stock position, a full-container shipment may be arranged from our factories overseas or our UK warehouse.

Do I need to arrange the freight myself?

Our team coordinates the shipping process with our freight forwarders and will explain the information required for your particular order.

What kind of products do you offer in a full container load?

We offer over 4000 products, 80% of which are designed in-house. This includes giftware, home accessories, home fragrance and more. Each of our products is available to order in a full container load, alternatively we also offer bespoke design services if you have a product in mind you'd like to develop.
